Why you decided to choose this resource?
I was recommended to read this book by our CEO to study the new science on the study of Habit. Habits define people and the way they live and work. I do not expect everyone to produce the high results that are illustrated in this book but team members can learn from its concepts.
What did you learn from it?
The resource reviews a set of case studies as the Author attempts to study why people do things and how can bad behaviors be corrected. The book talks about how cravings and ease of use form bad habits. It goes on to inform that not all habits are bad and if a person can correct daily bad behaviors, they can have a more productive life.
Key points
- Why the brain tries to make routines into habits.
- How cravings create and power new habits.
- How to apply the golden rule of habit change.
- Every habit has three components: a cue (or a trigger for an automatic behavior to start), a routine (the behavior itself) and a reward (which is how our brain learns to remember this pattern for the future.)
- The Golden Rule of Habit Change says that the most effective way to shift a habit is to diagnose and retain the old cue and reward, and try to change only the routine.
- What “keystone habits” are and the importance of them in creating a new routine.
- keystone habits are small changes or habits that people introduce into their routines that unintentionally carry over into other aspects of their lives
How are you using what you learned?
Personally, I have tried to identify my personal bad daily habits at our firm. I have noticed that even the smallest slip in bad behavior can cause a world of pain at the end of the week. One example is checking email in our company. I tend to get hundreds of emails and half of them need high attention or at least an intelligent response. I used to have a horrible habit of checking my email throughout the week instead of throughout the day. If I so much as slip back into this habit, it gravely affects business process and employee work.
How can we as a company or individuals in the company use this?
The company can use this resource to identify common sense reasons of why habits form and how to correct them. Even trying to correct a small percentage of your bad habits can go a long way in productivity.
