HBR: KNOWLEDGE MANAGEMENT- “RESEARCH THAT REINVENTS THE CORPORATION”

Why did I choose this resource?

I chose to read this chapter because through research in the growing technology field, Anant Corporation will continuously innovate in all areas possible.419zMNv3ilL

What did you learn from it?

I learned that most successful companies don’t just perform research in one practice. Large companies spend time researching new products and other new work practices to best fit the growing fields.

Key Knowledge

  1. Innovation is everywhere; the problem is learning from it
  2. Research can’t just produce innovation; it must “coproduce” it
  3. The research department’s ultimate innovation partner is the customer

Xerox

In the early 1980’s, Xerox’s copier business faced a big problem. Service calls were increasing, and more and more customers were reporting that our newest copiers were “unreliable”. The complaints couldn’t have come at a worse time. They had been late to recognize market opportunities for low and mid range copiers, and other competitors such as Canon were cutting into their market share.

Why does this matter? Now, we see in the present day that Xerox didn’t just keep making the same copier machine that was so hard to use. The way that this company adapted to the customers’ wants proved how agile the establishment was.

How can we as a company use this knowledge?

By adapting to the growing economy with various work practices, it is very important that we also look into new products that can further benefit the expanding technology area.
