As we continue to sharpen our skills in our practice, we expanded our knowledge in a few areas which are directly related to our client work. The topics that attracted us this past month were Storage in Ephemeral Systems, Corporate Principles, Kubernetes Operators, Airtable Integration, Natural Language Processing. - Amazon’s 14 Leadership Principles
- Although our teammate Tom Hada (now starting his own company to make video games!) wrote our own use of the Amazon principles, we like Will Trevor’s analysis of them as well.
- Kubernetes Operator Framework
- Announced and publicized in May, The Operator Framework is an open-source toolkit to manage Kubernetes native applications, called Operators, in an effective, automated, and scalable way. We were especially intrigued by Confluent’s Kafka Operator.
- textacy: higher-level NLP built on spaCy
- textacy is a Python library for performing higher-level natural language processing (NLP) tasks, built on the high-performance spaCy library. With the basics — tokenization, part-of-speech tagging, dependency parsing, etc. — offloaded to another library, textacy focuses on tasks facilitated by the ready availability of tokenized, POS-tagged, and parsed text.
- Big Data Storage Wars: Ceph vs Gluster
- As containers take over the world, the data storage systems need to support the ephemeral systems based on frameworks like Docker, Kubernetes, Mesos, etc. We wanted to dig deeper and learn as other providers enter the market.
- Creating a serverless web app with Airtable, Glitch, Node.js, Surge.sh & Ember.js
- We really, really, really like Airtable (see Top 20 Links on Airtable). There are somethings Airtable can’t do. Shocking! As we researched how to solve client problem around Airtable integration, we saw this excellent article on how to make a serverless web app.
